Jasper, a granular variety of quartz, is a mixture of quartz and iron oxide and may be formed in several colors. Jasper is harder than a knife, and scratches glass but fine grades are polished into gems. Jasper is mentioned in the Bible as part of the breastplate of the Jewish High Priest.
